Hello Everybody!

This is how it went down this month.  I hope that you are all having a wonderful spring.

Take care.

THE MINOR TIMES left us too soon.  I only got to see them once on their “Making Enemies” tour with Drowningman.  I was looking forward to the tour with Engineer.  Even though they are gone, they left on a good note with a great record.  Summer of Wolves is just as powerful as their previous effort “Making Enemies”.

LIE AND WAIT hail from San Antonio, Texas.  The first time I saw this band they opened their set with a cover of Quicksand’s “Omission”.   I thought that the rest of their set would be filled with lots of Quicksand worship, but I was wrong.  LAW continued their set with some powerful hardcore.  The music is very 1990s influenced, but think more Morning Again than Quicksand.

When I saw the band name SEASICK, I immediately lumped them in with all the other bands with nautical/marine like names: Shipwreck, Sea of Thousand, Sinking Ships.  I could have simply dismissed this band, but the CD Awakenings delivers some well thought out hardcore.  SEASICK play no nonsense hardcore with very socio-political lyrics.  The band even references the books that inspired the lyrics for the songs.

Spring of 2008 is upon us, and I still felt like I had not heard a good beat down CD yet.  Then the new REIGN SUPREME CD arrived in the mail. American Violence clocks in under 12 minutes with only 6 songs.  This is just too short.  I want more.

I just saw DOWN TO NOTHING on tour with Earth Crisis a few weeks ago.  All of the bands on the tour were amazing, but I have to say that DOWN TO NOTHING put on one of the most energetic sets of the evening.  They had so much energy that I thought I was watching a hardcore show from 1988.  Their recently release, The Most, also does a great job of capturing that same energy.

PULLING TEETH could easily be lumped in with Integrity or Ringworm, but I hear an older style going on here.  Unlike the aforementioned bands, PULLING TEETH doesn’t waste time with breakdowns. It’s all fast. This is just go for the throat hardcore.

What the hell happened to BLACKLISTED?  I remember listening to We’re Unstoppable and enjoying it.  I didn’t care much for …the Beat Goes On, so I to be honest, I was not looking forward to their latest release, Heavier Than Heaven, Lonelier Than God.  I have never been happier to be wrong.  The new disc is so amazing.  This is great improvement over the previous releases, and it is bound to be one of the best discs of 2008.

I swear if I hear one more good Canadian hardcore band, I’m backing up all of my things and moving up to the great white north.  CURSED released their third CD III – The Architects of Troubled Sleep.  This band can do no wrong.  If you previously enjoyed the mayhem that was I and II, then you will definitely enjoy III because it is more of the same.

This is the first full-length release from CASSIUS, and damn is it powerful.  I know that many people are tired of the metal/hardcore mash up that’s being over played.  It’s not that it’s bad music at all; it’s just that there are so many bands playing this style of hardcore but not bringing anything new to the table.  Although I don’t hear CASSIUS doing anything that sounds new or different, they are still doing it well.  I’m bombarded with tons of “metalcore”, and a lot of it does not hold my attention, but for whatever reason, I’m really enjoying I Am Jim Jones.

It seems like it took forever for THE RED DEATH to release Godmakers, but it was worth the wait.  Godmakers is a great follow up to External Frames of Reference.  The songs seem heavier and angrier while still maintaining their Swedish metal influences.

My friend and I often sit around and debate what kind of metal band BEHEMOTH is.  Everything visually about this band says black metal.  They wear face paint and gothic style clothing.  However, this band sounds very death metal.  The music is powerful and assaults the listener.  Black metal, death metal, or whatever you want to call them. BEHEMOTH is just an all around amazing band.

I often wonder if abrasive music has a future.  It seems as if we’ve heard it all before, and everything has been done.  Just when you think that the music could not possibly get any heavier, faster, or louder, HATE ETERNAL release their new CD, Fury and Flames.  I thought that I, Monarch was it.  I figured that it was one of the heaviest CDs.  I was so wrong.  HATE ETERNAL have stepped up again, and released a great record.

DECAPITATED lost their drummer, Vitek, while touring Russia this past November.  Prior to the bus accident, DECAPITATED released a powerful and driving record titled, Organic Hallucinosis.  RIP Witold ‘Vitek’ Kieltyka (1984-2007).

I just can’t get enough of tech metal.  I love to hear musically proficient bands play the most mind-boggling music.  BRAIN DRILL manage to give me just what I want along with a healthy dose of gore to make me laugh.

BENEATH THE MASSACRE is yet another Canadian powerhouse.  The double bass drumming on this record is insane.  When I saw them live, I did not expect them to be as tight as the recording, but they managed to prove me wrong.

PSYOPUS are the new kings of tech-metal/hardcore. Hands down.  They are one of the tightest bands, and they are capable of pulling off that entire spectacular guitar playing live as well as recorded.  That’s a good enough reason for me.

My Darlin' Neurons,

Another winter holiday show is upon us and not nearly as late as last year.  Be happy.  It's been crazy busy around here and the Omega-3s are finally kicking in, we suspect.  Good for the soul, good for us, and good for everyone.

So dig in to the menu.

Hi.

Here are 13 songs for your time and consideration. 13 dreams. 13 ideas. 13 websites. Okay, well maybe 15 or 16 websites. Some of this music is extremely accessible and will have you tapping your foot immediately. Some of this music will have to scratching your head. Either way, it is charming. My favorite thing about doing these shows is the fact that almost all the bands emailed me back when I let them know they were getting a spin. The local internet.
